Visitors to Camosun Interurban can already see the work taking place on the new $48.5 million health and human services centre on campus, slated to open in 2019.

The new building will be designed for 21st century learning, provide a more interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning, and will deliver the most modern classrooms, with hands-on labs, simulation environments, support and collaboration spaces and medical equipment storage. It will bring together the majority of Camosun’s health and human service programming in one location which is currently provided at multiple buildings across two campuses.

Education and training for the health and human services sector is in high demand in the capital region and beyond. Camosun is responding to this demand through optimizing training opportunities for students within the new building, which has been anticipated for over a decade in the college’s capital plan.

On August 14, 2017 Saanich District Council approved a development variance permit for the new building related to side yard setback, building height and parking. Throughout the planning and construction process, Camosun has been working closely with Saanich staff and Council to optimize services such as parking and to ensure that density matters are reasonably and carefully addressed. Accordingly, Camosun will provide an additional 195 parking spaces at Interurban, which is 45 greater than the maximum variance which could have been permitted by Council.

Camosun understands and appreciates local traffic challenges and will work with partners including District of Saanich and BC Transit towards solutions—keeping in mind that Bunt & Associates’ recent traffic report clearly indicates that Camosun was not the primary cause of traffic congestion for the Interurban thoroughfare. Focusing on student transportation needs, Camosun encourages measures to decrease traffic congestion through car-sharing, car-pooling, cycling, and other means. Additionally, the college operates the Camosun Express Shuttle to complement the many BC Transit bus routes which run to and from Interurban and regional destinations from the early morning until midnight daily.

Starting fall 2017, Camosun is undertaking a comprehensive Campus Master Planning process that will examine a number of services including parking, food, the library and more. Based on the study outcomes, Camosun will carefully and holistically address the service needs identified through short, medium and long-term planning processes.

When the doors open on the new building in 2019, Camosun will be ready and able to welcome hundreds of new students and staff, representing a game-changing moment in the college’s proud history and future-focused evolution.
