Matter and its transformations

The world around us

Chemistry and biochemistry involve the study of physical and chemical nature of matter. They serve as a foundation to better understand how matter interacts and transforms at the molecular level. This branch of science has provided improved living standards with breakthroughs in pharmaceutical healthcare and environmental sustainability.

A central science

Chemistry is everywhere. It is a  foundation to understanding and relating other sciences such as biology, biochemistry, geology, and environmental sciences to each other.

Many professional disciplines, such as dentistry, pharmacology, and medicine, require first- and second-year chemistry as prerequisites.

In the classroom

Our instructors are experienced chemists with specialized industrial and academic backgrounds in organic, inorganic, organometallic, physical chemistry, electrochemistry and biochemistry.

You'll study the physical nature of matter and how its transformation can either benefit or harm our existence. You'll also develop hands-on technical and problem-solving skills.

All of our first and second-year courses have university transfer credit. We also offer upgrading (CHEM 070 , CHEM 100 and CHEM 110) and nutrition (CHEM 117) for pre-dietetics program students.

Part-time or full-time studies

You can take Chemistry courses within one of our 2-year programs or as individual courses on a part-time basis. If you plan to take Chemistry courses on their own, you will select University Transfer as your program option when you apply online to Camosun.

"Chlorine is a deadly poison gas employed on European battlefields in World War 1. Sodium is a corrosive metal which burns upon contact with water. Together they make a placid and unpoisonous material, table salt. Why each of these substances has the properties it does is a subject called Chemistry."
