Campus Update

Safe Start Camosun – limiting on-campus learning

From COVID-19 Response Coordination Team

We are planning for a mixture of online and in-person classes over the coming months. Where possible, courses that can be delivered remotely will continue that way, while courses with components that can only be delivered on-campus will be carried out in a manner that is safe for everyone.

Safe Start Camosun
The college has established a process to streamline the approval and planning of components of courses and programs that need to be delivered on campus. The Safe Start Camosun On-Campus Approval Process has four main stages:
Stage 1: On Campus Course Approval;
Stage 2: On Campus Assessment and Plan Development;
Stage 3: Plan Execution and Readiness; and,
Stage 4: Education and Service Delivery, and Ongoing Health and Safety Adherence.

Priority for the summer will be given to courses that allow students to finish off winter courses that had to be halted due to COVID-19 and courses that need students to come on-campus to access specialized equipment or face-to-face instruction. The deadline for course submissions is June 5.

Approval process
John Boraas, Vice President, Education, is overseeing the approval of courses and programs that are required to come on campus. Jennifer Stone, Director, Strategic Initiatives, is working with stakeholders to ensure things run as smoothly as possible.

All courses that require an on campus component need to be submitted for approval and planning via the Safe Start SharePoint site that has been shared with the Deans for dissemination. Completing a form on the Safe Start SharePoint triggers other processes that are essential to the approval of on campus course delivery as it is linked to the necessary student supports, ITS, Occupational Health and Safety, and Facilities Services.

Guiding principles
Four guiding principles will assist the new process:

  1. Courses that can be delivered entirely online, as well as virtual or online components of applied courses, will remain online;
  2. On campus and blended courses that require students to come on-campus or have a face-to-face component will be delivered in a way that is safe for students and employees;
  3. The transition to this practice at Camosun is being guided by the Provincial Health Officer’s core guidelines; practice standards that are being developed for the post-secondary sector by the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training; and, health and safety advice from WorkSafe BC; and,
  4. Depending on circumstances, we may need to make adjustments as we progress through the months ahead assuming we will continue to receive new and modified information. This continues to be a highly fluid environment, and we all know there are circumstances that could interrupt this Safe Start.

Student Services
The initial focus is on the delivery of courses and programs. A similar process is being developed for a small number of student support services that are essential while students are on campus. Lessons learned from the educational process will be applied to the student service process for a consideration of a safe return of very limited services. More details will be made available in the weeks ahead.

Next Steps
The college’s goal is to keep everyone safe and to deliver the best possible educational experience. Faculty can visit the Safe Start Camosun Teams Channel for process support or to ask questions about submitting a course for approval. A similar approach will be taken with employees in areas that provide service to students or the college community.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
